Burnin’ up at Chris Lake

If you know anything about us, you know we have a slight obsession with Chris Lake. We were so stoked to be given the opportunity to cover his Black Book Experience show in Denver on October 12th! It’s always a blast writing about how amazing one of your favorite artists is.

On top of seeing Chris Lake, we were also looking forward to being treated to a slice of spice from Worthy, who was booked as direct support. But when we got to the Ogden Theatre at 10:45pm, equipped with Tic Tac gum and enough energy to run a marathon, Chris Lake was already playing! This was an unwelcome surprise, and it sent us straight into panic mode, hoping we didn’t miss any of our favorite songs.

In line to see our favorite guy!

Claudia: Casey and our friend Nat swore he was playing “Deceiver” as we were walking in, but I refused to believe he would drop it so early in his set (assuming we were actually catching the beginning of his set)*. We didn’t think to check for set times because we assumed Chris wouldn’t come on before 11.

*Thankfully, Chris ended up dropping “Deceiver” later on in his set.

Even if we did miss some of his set, it sure didn’t feel like it. The entire night was banger after banger after banger (what’s new??). He played all of his hits as well as an unimaginable amount of new music that probably won’t be released for another eight years (another classic Chris Lake move).

In all seriousness, we had Shazam out, trying to ID songs, at least 35% of the show. How can someone still have so much unreleased music? Better yet, how can someone have strong enough willpower to withhold all of it from us??? We must admit, this is one killer strategy for hyping up his music and brand.

One of the songs we successfully Shazam-ed yet can’t actually find on a music platform anywhere. (Nothing happens when you click to open the song in Spotify, Apple Music, or Deezer.)

Casey: Being my first time at the Ogden, I was really impressed with the venue. I feel like it was the perfect setting for a Chris Lake set. There was plenty of room between the main floor and upper balcony. One of my favorite parts of the show was the crowd, though. House music brings together the best people. The majority of the night, we were dancing next to a 65 year-old man who had come to the show solo. Bless him. That is our future.

Although it was a packed house for the night, we managed to grab spots at the rail on the balcony level and enjoy unobstructed views of Chris Lake’s red, green, and blue lights smacking us in the face until well past 12:30am. Honestly, we can’t be sure what time the show actually ended because he sent us time-traveling to techno at midnight.

Claudia: I cried.

We have seen him countless times, but this was by far our favorite set from Uncle Chris. He is just one of those artists you can see a million times and still expect to be blown away. We’re already counting down the days until we catch him again in Pontiac, MI, on November 3rd. Cross your fingers he’ll have time for an interview!

Let us know if you’ll be there too!
