Galo’s New Single “Whack” Delivers What It Promises

We stumbled upon Galo at Imagine Music Festival this past September after hearing his set from a distance and naturally gravitating towards the house music.

After his performance, he stuck around to say hi to some fans, and we couldn’t help but approach him and tell him how incredible his set was. In that moment, he made our up-and-comer, artist-to-watch list. It didn’t hurt that he was the sweetest human to talk to as well!

Today, Galo delivered a slice of spice in the form of his latest single, appropriately titled “Whack.” Twangy, groovy notes balance out a dark baseline at first, but nothing balances out the filthy synths as they come in HOT.

We asked for a few juicy details about his process and producing the track:

What is your process like in the studio when creating new music?

I feel like my process takes on a lot of different forms. Regardless of the day, I’m working on music but what I do depends on my mood or what I’ve got going on that day. Sometimes I just play guitar or piano with no real goal in mind. Other times I’ll lay down drums and a bassline, or a chord progression, and build from there. I try not to force things because when you do you’re very rarely left with a project that is worthwhile or satisfying. What tends to happen is that through hours of work and trial and error, there are these moments where you’ll just hear something in your head, write it down and then it all starts to flow. I’ve written a song in an hour, and I’ve written a song over a week. It’s all so different.

Was your approach on creating this song any different from your past releases?

This song came together in such a weird way. I had a project open and was pretty stuck, so I took a break and went on twitter. I ended up looking through a vine thread and came across the “His hair? Whack! His gear? Whack!…Me? Im tight as fuck!” one. I thought “hmm that could be pretty funny on a build-up.” I originally was going for a vibe like Jaime Jones’ remix of “enough to believe” which is why I have the bass playing 1/16th notes and those old-school chord stabs. Once I threw that sample in, the song ended up going a completely different direction. I knew I had to pick up the intensity, and I wanted to toy with a “call and response” pattern. That’s why you hear so many different bass sounds on the drop. You got the main acid-like 1/16th note bass and then some super strange bass hit as a response. So yeah, from Jaime Jones inspired to a weird house/bass/meme-based track.

We’re excited to continue to support Galo and watch his story unfold. It’s happening, guys, so pay attention to this one!
